Welcome to Telling Trails!

What’s this site about?

This is the homepage for Telling Trails, the online guide to children’s book authors, illustrators and literary landmarks in London. My name is Terri McCargar and I am the website’s author. There are many other resources about children’s books and their creators, just as there are many literary guides to London. But when I couldn’t find any literary guides to the children’s books of London, I decided to create my own. Initially, the site will be limited to the Greater London (South-west) region, the area that I know best, but I hope to develop it further.

Who’s it for?

Telling Trails is for anyone who shares an interest in children’s books and the local area. It is an independent, educational, non-commercial website, freely available to anyone with access to the web. (Visit the acknowledgements to learn more about the inspiration for the site.)

How does it work?

There are three main ways to browse. You can use the links at the top of this page (or below) or in the navigation bar.

Browse by area allows you to link to a particular page for a town, which describes in brief the children’s books, authors and illustrators associated with that area. (This is currently limited to Twickenham and a bit on Richmond and Barnes, but more content will be developed.) Some of the brief entries invite you to “view full entry”, to link to a longer article about that individual or book.

The index of names is a list of authors and illustrators featured on this site. Click on any name to go to that person’s entry on the relevant town page.

The index of titles is a list of the books featured on this site. Again, you can click on any title to find out more about the book’s connection with the area.

Contacting authors and illustrators

Please remember that authors and illustrators are busy people who often work from home, and they are just as entitled to privacy as the rest of us. This website does not publish the address for any author or illustrator. (If a former address is given, please take care to respect the rights and privacy of the current resident or owner.) If you would like to get in touch with an author or illustrator, it is best to send a letter via their publisher.
